Interview
By Julien LANCHAS , Wednesday October 26, 2016
Josh JAUNCEY is one of the the most promising prospects fighting for GLORY. The 23 years old good-looking Canadian will face Dylan SALVADOR at GLORY 35 NICE on November 5th. Who is this mustached fighter ? Here is his interview.
I got into kickboxing/Muay Thai because of my father. He was a fighter in his youth. I grew up in the gym, watching the other fighters and eventually having my first fight at 9 years old. My first fight was the most fun I'd ever had and I couldn't wait to do it again!
Now, your father is your trainer, isn't he ?
Yes, my main trainer from the beginning is my father. He is a big inspiration to me and he has always guided me to be my own fighter by encouraging my uniqueness. Over the last few years my older brother, Jay Jauncey, has also been training me. He is the professor. He studies all my fights, my opponents and future opponents so I can always be prepared for anyone. Also, when I am in Holland I train with one of my favorite fighters, Andy Souwer, who was one of my biggest idols during my teenage years. I've learned a lot from him about fighting and about the journey to the top.
How is kickboxing in Canada ?
Kickboxing in Canada isn't very good. We don't have much support from the country and there aren't many people who train to be professional kickboxers. There aren't any famous fighters for children to look up to in the media because professional kickboxing & Muay Thai is actually illegal here.
What kind of fighter are you ?
I am a different kind of fighter compared to the rest. I am technical, dynamic, creative and unpredictable. I don't have any weaknesses, the only way to beat me is to have a better night than me. You gotta get lucky.
What was your record before Glory ?
Before Glory I had only had 3 professional fights. My second pro fight was against former Enfusion champion, David Calvo and my 3rd was against Japanese star, Hinata. Since I turned professional, I've only fought the best in the world. Before my professional career I had 20 amateur fights on small events in Canada and USA.
What can you say about your 8 fights with Glory ?
Each fight has it's own story and it's own lesson. Most of my fights for Glory have gone very well, others just ok. But no matter what the result, I learned a lot. Some fights perhaps came a little too soon in my career but they taught me a lot and I've gotten better after every fight.
Your next fight is vs Dylan SALVADOR. How do you consider this opponent ?
Dylan is a good fighter. Very well rounded and young, like me. Nothing stands out as amazing, but he is good everywhere.
What is your strategy to defeat him ?
I don't have a strategy. I'll see what I have to do once the first bell rings. I already know I have the skills to be victorious.
Which fighters would you like to fight in the next events ?
I would like to get revenge on the fighters that have beat me. I don't believe anyone has ever beat me because they were better, only because I didn't fight to the best of my ability.
Your ring entrances are sometimes very nice. How do you "create" them ?
My entrance is often a representation of how I'm feeling going into the fight or it is telling a story about the fight. That's why you must always listen closely to my music.
Why latino music for GLORY 35 PARIS ?
It was one of my grandfather's favorites songs and all of his kids (my mum and all her brothers) were at the stadium to watch. I kept it a surprise until the moment I walked to the ring and they heard it. They all cried.
Fancy beard, tatoo, necklace : is fashion an important part of who you are ?
I just wear what makes me feel good. I don't like to blend into the crowd. I believe everybody is unique, but many are scared to stand out. I embrace my uniqueness.
Do you have hobbies ? What do you do when you are not punching or kicking ?
My life revolves around training and kickboxing, but when I'm not at the gym I enjoy the best things in life. Food, music, film, books and conversing with interesting people. Every thing I do is to gain knowledge and experience in life.
What would you have done if you were not a fighter ?
I don't know what I would be doing if I wasn't a fighter. I don't think about that because this is who I am.
